BARRANQUILLA – OUR TOWN
Barranquilla is the Capital of the Atlantic Department. It is Located on the west bank of the Magdalena River, 7.5 km from the Caribbean Sea. It was Constitutionally organized as aspecial industrial and port district. It is one of the most important urban centers in Colombia, and the main commercial, industrial, cultural and educational center in the Colombian Caribbean region.
Barranquilla is referred toas the “Colombia's Golden Gate” due toits contributions to the growthof the country. It has been one of the pioneers in commercial aviation in Latin America, and the point of introduction for new technologies such as the telephone and radio. It is also recognized for its “open-arm” policy; serving as a haven for European and Middle Eastern immigrants who in turn enriched the history and cultural legacy of Barranquilla.
Barranquilla is home to one of the most important folk and cultural festivals of Colombia, the Carnaval of Barranquilla. It was declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation by the Congress of Colombia in 2001 and recognized by UNESCO as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. It was also chosen as the American Capital of Culture in 2013.
Also known as “Curramba la Bella” (Curramba the Beautiful city) and “La Arenosa” (The Sandy), Barranquilla has its share of nicknames that reflect the festive atmosphere and the warmthof its people.
